张楚岚 Zhang Chulan

The male protagonist. Grandson of 张怀义 Zhang Huaiyi, who was a key figure in the 甲申之乱 Jiashen Calamity of 1944. Practiced yiren techniques until his grandfather's demise when Zhang Chulan was seven years old. For the next 12 years, kept his head down and sought to live as an ordinary person. A college student, and now an employee of 哪都通 NDT Express. Likes to complain and seems lazy, but is actually very calculating. Has been nicknamed "不摇碧莲" (a pun on 不要逼脸) for his shamelessness, but doesn't care. Uncovering Bao'er-jie's past and protecting her is his top priority. Inheritor of 炁体源流 Qi Apotheosis, one of the 八奇技 Eight Supremes, as well as the 金光咒 Golden Brilliance Spell and 阴五雷 Yin Five Thunders techniques.

冯宝宝 Feng Baobao

The female protagonist. Sometime before the summer of 1944, lost her memories, emotions, and ability to speak. Was then found and taken in by the Xu family. Nicknamed 阿无 a-Wu (meaning nothingness) by a young 徐翔 Xu Xiang, eventually recalled only her birth name. Now a 临时工 temporary worker of 哪都通 NDT Express, responsible for the Northern China region. Speaks with a strong Sichuan accent. Although 70 years have passed, still looks only 18- or 19-years old. Straightforward in both her speech and behavior, will usually try to resolve issues with her fists. Is a martial arts and 炁 Qi master. Fixated on uncovering her past, wanting to find her family and history is her greatest desire.Author 米二 Mi Er revealed in an interview that the core of Feng Baobao's spirit is the ideal state toward which all Daoists strive: like that of a 赤子 newborn.

王也 Wang Ye

A fuerdai Daoist. The third son of 王卫国 Wang Weiguo, the chairman of 中海集团 Zhonghai Conglomerate. Awakened as a yiren by chance during a childhood visit to 武当山 Mt. Wudang. After reaching an agreement with his parents, successfully tested into 清华大学 Tsinghua University, where he studied for three years before 出家 leaving home to become a monk. Was then formally accepted as a disciple of 武当派 Wudang Sect of the 全真 Quanzhen denomination, taking 云龙 Yun Long as his shifu. Humble, level-headed, and unmotivated by fortune, fame, and power. Has such a "can't be bothered" personality that it would be easy to think him indolent. But despite his relaxed and casual appearance, can be very stiff-necked. Naturally intelligent and very competent. When making choices, will always consider others first. A parkour and Tai-Chi master, as well as a 术士 sorcerer. Inheritor of 风后奇门 Feng-hou Qimen, one of the 八奇技 Eight Supremes.

张灵玉 Zhang Lingyu

A Daoist of 龙虎山 Mt. Longhu's 天师符 Tianshi Mansion of the 正一 Zhengyi denomination. The tenth and last disciple of the 65th 天师 Celestial Master 张之维 Zhang Zhiwei. Upright, virtuous, and earnest to the point of endearing foolishness, he is fundamentally kind-hearted and very respectful toward his shifu. In general, amicable and gentle, yet overly hard on himself. Because of his history with 全性 Quanxing's 夏禾 Xia He, cannot learn the 阳五雷 Yang Five Thunders technique. For that reason, he seems to detest her, but in truth still loves her deeply. Much of his inner turmoil and envy regarding 张楚岚 Zhang Chulan stems from being unable to accept his impermanent, imperfect self. Inheritor of the 金光咒 Golden Brilliance Spell and 阴五雷 Yin Five Thunders techniques.

诸葛青 Zhuge Qing

A descendant of 武侯 the Marquis of Wu himself, 诸葛亮 Zhuge Liang. Inheritor of 武侯奇门 Wu-hou Qimen, he is the first 术士 sorcerer in several decades to master all four 盘 planes (天地人神 heavens, earth, human, god) in their entirety. The most outstanding among the younger generation in his family; carries the hope and expectations of his elders, including those of his father 诸葛栱 Zhuge Gong. This pressure was always a positive motivator, until he ran into a "bottleneck" one day. Looks aloof, actually is the embodiment of romance and refined taste. Usually easy-going, 游戏人间 "plays" through life and enjoys worldly pleasures. Treats his little brother 诸葛白 Zhuge Bai very well. Claims to be uninterested in others' gossip, loves nothing more than to be nosy. Somewhat 腹黑 two-faced, yet possesses a clear moral bottom line. Is prideful but discerning; has a clear understanding of himself and reality. Follows his heart, demonstrates strong self-restraint, sets strict demands for himself. Prioritizes the truth. Unlike 王也 Wang Ye who is concerned about 天下 everything under the heavens first, Zhuge Qing's starting point of consideration is himself and his family. Of the 八卦 Eight Trigrams, the 巽 character (denoting wind) is suited most closely to his nature.The prototype for Zhuge Qing is 诸葛亮 Zhuge Liang from 《九九八十一》9 By 9 Makes 81, one of 米二 Mi Er's earlier works.
